What Is a Creche? (And Why It Is Different From a Daycare)

If you have been searching for childcare in Gurugram, you have probably seen the word creche used in a lot of places. Sometimes alongside daycare. Sometimes instead of it. And if you are new to all of this, it can feel like everyone is using words that they assume you already know.
So let us just sort this out properly.
What is a creche?
A creche is a facility that looks after young children, typically infants and toddlers, while their parents are at work or otherwise unavailable. The word comes from French and has been used in India for decades, particularly in workplace settings where employers were required to provide on-site childcare for employees.
In India, the government has specific guidelines under the Maternity Benefit Act that require certain employers to provide creche facilities. This is where most people first encounter the word.
In everyday use in cities like Gurugram, a creche and a daycare are often used interchangeably. They describe the same basic thing: a safe, supervised environment for young children during the day.
So what is the difference between a creche and a daycare?
The honest answer is that in most practical contexts in India, there is no meaningful difference. Both refer to full-day or extended-hour childcare for young children.
Where the two terms sometimes diverge is in the type of facility and the emphasis on care versus learning.
A creche in the traditional sense is primarily a care facility. The focus is on safety, feeding, napping, and basic supervision. It tends to be associated with workplace-based childcare or government-run facilities.
A daycare, particularly modern private daycares, tends to offer more structured programming. Daily schedules that include learning activities, circle time, outdoor play, and intentional developmental activities alongside the core care functions of meals and naps.
In practice, the best daycares in Gurugram today are doing both: proper full-day care and a real developmental curriculum.
How is a daycare different from a playschool?
This is where parents often get confused, so it is worth spelling out clearly.
A playschool (also called a preschool or nursery) is focused on early education. Sessions are typically 2 to 4 hours long. The child goes in, does structured activities, and comes home. It is not designed for full working days.
A daycare covers your full working day, typically 8 to 10 hours. It includes meals, nap time, and a daily curriculum alongside childcare. It is designed specifically for working parents who need reliable, full-day coverage.
The difference between playschool and daycare often comes down to timing and purpose. Playschool is about early learning readiness. Daycare is about full-day care with learning built in.
What about a nanny? How does that compare?
A nanny is one person, in your home, caring for your child one-on-one. That one-on-one attention can be wonderful for very young infants. But it comes with its own considerations.
- Verification. Is your nanny police verified and properly referenced? With a daycare, staff verification is part of the standard operating process.
- Socialisation. A child cared for exclusively by a nanny at home misses out on peer interaction, group play, and the experience of being in a group setting. These social skills matter for school readiness.
- Consistency. A nanny can call in sick, quit, or have a bad day. A well-run daycare has a team, so your child's day is not disrupted because one person is unavailable.
- Curriculum. A nanny's activities depend entirely on that individual's initiative. A daycare has a planned daily programme regardless of who is in on a given day.
None of this means a nanny is the wrong choice. For infants under 12 months, home-based one-on-one care often makes more sense than a group setting. But from around 18 months onwards, the peer interaction and structured environment of a good daycare offers things a home-based nanny simply cannot.
Questions to ask when a centre calls itself a crèche
Because the words are used loosely in Gurugram, the label on the signboard tells you very little. Ask these instead, and you'll quickly know what you're actually looking at:
- What are the exact opening and closing times, and is there a minimum number of hours per day?
- Is there a structured routine, or is it supervised free play all day?
- Are meals cooked on site, or do parents send tiffins?
- Is there a separate nap room with an individual mattress for each child?
- What is the caregiver-to-child ratio at nap time and at the end of the day?
- Can you book flexible hours, or only fixed full days?
A centre that answers "full day, cooked meals, a nap room and a published routine" is running a daycare, whatever it calls itself. A centre offering short, flexible blocks of supervised care is closer to a traditional crèche.
How to decide in one week
Write down the hours you genuinely need covered, visit two or three centres on a weekday morning, and ask for a short trial at your favourite. Watch how your child is greeted, whether caregivers kneel to their eye level, and how calm the room feels. Most parents know within an hour of a trial whether a place is right; the label matters far less than what happens in the room.
What working parents in Gurugram actually need from a full day creche
If you are a working parent trying to decide between options, here is what matters most.
- Full day coverage. Your work day is 8 or 9 hours. The centre needs to be open from early morning to early evening without extra charges for standard hours.
- Safety infrastructure. CCTV with parent access, biometric entry, police-verified staff. Non-negotiable.
- Real meals. Not biscuits and packaged snacks. Freshly cooked breakfast, lunch, and an afternoon snack.
- A proper nap setup. Individual mattresses, temperature control, a caregiver present throughout.
- A daily schedule. Not just supervision but intentional activities across the day that develop your child cognitively, physically, and socially.
- Regular updates. You want to know how your child's day went. A good centre gives you a daily verbal handover, not just a thumbs up at pickup.
