How to Choose a Daycare in Gurugram: The Complete Parent's Checklist

Choosing a daycare for your child is one of the hardest decisions you will make as a parent. You are trusting someone else with the most important person in your life, for 8 to 10 hours a day, five days a week. That is not a small thing.

If you are in Gurugram and currently searching for a daycare, you are probably a little overwhelmed. There are a lot of options, the prices vary wildly, and every centre sounds good on their website. So how do you actually figure out which one is right for your child?

This is a simple, honest checklist. No fluff. Just the things that actually matter.

Start with safety and hygiene

Before anything else, walk into the space and look around. Your gut will tell you a lot.

But beyond the gut feeling, here is what to specifically check.

  • CCTV: Is there CCTV in every room? Can parents access the live feed? This is not negotiable. Any daycare that hesitates on this question is one you should walk away from.
  • Entry and exit: Is there a biometric entry? Can an unauthorised person walk in and pick up your child without verification? Ask directly.
  • Child proofing: Are corners covered? Are doors fitted with finger guards? Is there anything a toddler could pull down, choke on, or trip over?
  • Fire safety: Ask when their last fire safety drill was. Ask if there is an evacuation plan and whether staff are trained.
  • Staff verification: Are caregivers police verified? This is mandatory in India for childcare workers but not always followed. Ask for confirmation.

A good daycare will answer all of these without hesitation. If anyone gets defensive or vague, that tells you something important.

Caregiver ratio matters more than you think

The ratio of caregivers to children is the single most important factor in how much individual attention your child will get.

In India, many daycares run at 1:8 or even 1:10 ratios. At that ratio, your child is one of ten. No caregiver can truly watch ten toddlers at once.

Look for a centre with a maximum 1:4 ratio. That is the number that allows a caregiver to actually notice if a child is upset, tired, hungry, or needs something.

Ask the centre what their ratio is and whether it is maintained throughout the day, including during nap time.

The food question is a big one

Toddlers eat multiple times a day at daycare. What they eat, how it is prepared, and whether it suits your child's dietary needs matters enormously.

Ask these questions.

  • Is food cooked fresh on site every day or brought in from outside? Fresh and on-site is always better. Outsourced catering often means reheated food of unknown quality.
  • What is on the weekly menu? Ask to see it. Look for real, home-style meals. Dal rice chapati. Idli. Upma. Not packet snacks, not biscuits, not processed food.
  • How are allergies handled? If your child has a nut allergy, dairy intolerance, or any dietary restriction, the centre should have a clear protocol and a dedicated meal plan for your child.
  • Is refined sugar used? Most toddlers do not need added sugar in their meals. A good centre will be aware of this.

Nap time and rest facilities

Toddlers need sleep. A centre that does not take nap time seriously is a centre where children will be overtired, cranky, and not learning effectively.

Check the nap room. Are there individual mattresses or are children sleeping on mats on the floor? Are sheets washed between uses? Is the room temperature controlled? Is it dark enough for actual sleep?

Ask whether a caregiver is present in the nap room throughout rest time. The answer should always be yes.

Does the daycare have a daily curriculum?

A good full day daycare is not just childcare. It should have a structured daily programme that includes learning time, physical activity, creative play, and social interaction.

Ask to see the daily schedule. A well-run centre will have a clear structure: morning welcome, breakfast, circle time, learning activity, outdoor play, lunch, nap, snack, free play, and a handover at the end of the day.

If the answer to what does my child do all day is just they play, push further. Play-based learning is excellent but it should be intentional, not just unsupervised time.

Air quality: the thing most Gurugram parents forget to ask

Gurugram's air quality is poor. We all know this. But when you are choosing a daycare, air quality inside the building is something almost no one thinks to ask about.

Your child is spending 8 to 10 hours inside this building every day. What they are breathing matters.

Ask whether the centre uses HEPA grade air purifiers. Ask how many rooms have purifiers. Ask whether AQI is monitored inside the centre. Ask if there are live plants that actively purify the air.

This might sound like a lot to ask. But you are choosing a place where your toddler will spend more waking hours than at home on weekdays. The air quality in that building is worth knowing about.

What to ask on your visit: a quick list

Bring this list when you visit any daycare.

  • What is your caregiver to child ratio?
  • Are caregivers police verified?
  • Can I access the CCTV feed on my phone?
  • Who is allowed to pick up my child?
  • Is food cooked fresh on site?
  • Can I see the weekly menu?
  • How are allergies handled?
  • What does the daily schedule look like?
  • What happens if my child falls sick during the day?
  • Is there a doctor or clinic nearby?
  • Do you offer a trial day?
  • What is included in the monthly fee?

Any centre worth its fee will answer all of these confidently and openly. Use their answers to compare.

The trial day is non-negotiable

Before you commit to any daycare, ask for a trial. Most good centres offer a free trial visit (ours is 2 hours) where your child comes in, meets the caregivers, and you get to see how they operate in real time.

This is different from a tour. On a tour, everything is set up to impress you. On a trial day, you see the actual routine.

Watch how caregivers interact with children who are not yours. Watch how they handle a child who is crying. Watch how the space functions when it is full. That is the real centre, not the one on the website.

Trust your instincts too

Checklists are useful. But at the end of it, you will know. When you walk into the right place, something settles. The children look comfortable. The caregivers look calm. The space smells clean and feels safe.

If you leave a visit feeling unsure, that is an answer too.

Take your time. Visit more than one place. Ask every question on this list. And do not sign anything until you have seen a trial day.

Under 2 years: 1:3 or 1:4. Ages 2–3: 1:4 or 1:5. Anything wider means less individual attention.
