Air Quality at Indoor Play Centres in Gurugram: What Parents Should Know
By Chitra Puri, founder of Just Goofing · May 25, 2026

If you live in Gurugram, you are already aware that the air outside is not great. The AQI regularly hits the unhealthy range, particularly between October and February. Most parents know to keep children indoors on bad air days.
But here is the question almost no one asks: what is the air quality like inside the building your child is spending several hours in every day?
This matters more than most parents realise. If you are sending your child to a daycare, a play centre, or an indoor school, they are breathing the air in that building for 3 to 8 hours a day. The quality of that air is not a minor detail.
Why indoor air quality is a real concern for children
Children breathe faster than adults. A toddler takes roughly 20 to 40 breaths per minute compared to 12 to 20 for an adult. This means they are taking in more air relative to their body weight, and therefore more of whatever is in that air.
In Gurugram, the specific concerns for indoor air are particulate matter from outdoor pollution that gets inside through ventilation, dust mites and allergens in centres that have carpet or soft furnishings not cleaned regularly, carbon dioxide buildup in poorly ventilated spaces, and mould and humidity in buildings that are not well maintained.
What to ask any indoor play centre or daycare about air quality
Before you choose a centre, ask these specific questions.
Do you use HEPA grade air purifiers? Standard air purifiers use HEPA H10 or H11 filters. HEPA H13, which is what is used in hospital environments, catches 99.95% of particles at 0.3 microns. There is a meaningful difference. Ask specifically which grade the centre uses.
How many rooms have purifiers? A purifier in the main hall and nothing in the nap room is not enough. Every room where children spend significant time should have its own unit.
Do you monitor indoor AQI? Some centres display the live indoor AQI reading. This is a sign of genuine commitment to air quality, not just a marketing claim.
What is your ventilation setup? In Gurugram, pure ventilation by opening windows is not always a good idea because it lets in outdoor pollutants. Centres should have a controlled system that brings in fresh air while filtering out pollutants.
Do you have plants? Certain indoor plants are proven to absorb indoor pollutants and increase oxygen levels. A space with 20 to 30 such plants has genuinely better air than a space without them.
The link between air quality and child development
The indoor air pollution effect on children in India is not just a physical health issue. Studies on air quality and cognitive development in children are consistent: children who breathe cleaner air perform better on memory, attention, and problem-solving tasks. This is particularly relevant for toddlers in their peak brain development years.
What we do at Just Goofing
HEPA air purifiers in a daycare and creche in Gurgaon are a standard part of our setup at Just Goofing, not an add-on.
HEPA H13 grade air purifiers in every room, including the nap room and the play areas. Over 30 live air-purifying plants throughout the centre: Areca palms, Snake plants, Money plants, and Peace lilies. Live AQI monitoring displayed at reception. On days when the outdoor AQI exceeds 200, all outdoor play automatically moves indoors. N95-equivalent child masks available for transport on particularly bad air days.
We did not start with this setup because we were told to. We started with it because the people who built Just Goofing are parents themselves, and when you think about where your own child is going to spend 8 hours a day, you think about every detail including the air.
Practical tips for parents
Ask your child's current school or daycare what air purification they have. If they cannot answer clearly, that is information worth having.
Keep indoor plants at home. Even a few well-maintained plants in a bedroom make a difference.
Run an air purifier in your child's bedroom overnight. This is when they are breathing in a concentrated space for the longest period.
Check the AQI before outdoor play sessions. Below 100 is fine. Above 150, keep it brief. Above 200, stay inside.
Do not rely on air conditioning alone. AC circulates and cools air but it does not filter fine particles the way a HEPA purifier does.
Reading an AQI number as a parent
The Air Quality Index groups pollution into bands. As a rough guide: 0–50 is good, 51–100 satisfactory, 101–200 moderate, 201–300 poor, 301–400 very poor and above 400 severe. Children breathe faster than adults and spend more time active, so on poor and very poor days it makes sense to move active play indoors, into a filtered space.
Outdoor AQI doesn't tell you what's happening indoors, though. A closed room with no filtration can be just as polluted as outside. That's why it's worth asking any play centre or daycare whether they measure indoor air and what the reading was this morning.
Winter smog season in Gurugram
From late October to January, Gurugram's air quality regularly drops into the poor or very poor bands, especially in the mornings and evenings. Plan outdoor play for the early afternoon when air is usually at its least bad, keep windows closed on bad days, and run purifiers in the rooms where children sleep and play.
Oxygen rich indoor plants for kids spaces
If you are setting up a home play area or want cleaner air at home, these plants are among the most effective: Areca palm, Snake plant, Money plant, Peace lily, and Spider plant. All are available at nurseries in Gurugram and none are expensive or difficult to maintain.
Air quality is one of those things that parents in Gurugram are becoming more aware of year by year. If it is something you care about for your child, ask about it directly before choosing a daycare, a play centre, or any indoor space where your child spends significant time.
